What to Test For

  • Dead keys: Press every key — if nothing appears, the switch may be faulty
  • Ghosting: Press 3+ keys simultaneously — cheap keyboards drop some inputs
  • Chatter: Press once, see if it registers twice (common mechanical keyboard issue)
  • Stuck keys: Release a key — it should immediately disappear from 'pressed' list

Why Test Your Keyboard?

  • New keyboard QC: Verify all keys work before the return window closes
  • Used/vintage keyboards: Check for worn switches before buying
  • After spill cleanup: Confirm no keys are stuck or unresponsive
  • Gaming prep: Ensure your WASD and ability keys have zero issues
  • Mechanical keyboard mods: Test after swapping switches or keycaps

N-Key Rollover (NKRO) Test

  • Press as many keys as you can simultaneously
  • Cheap membrane keyboards: Usually 2-6 key limit (then 'ghosting')
  • Gaming keyboards: Often 10+ keys or full NKRO
  • Full NKRO means every key registers, no matter how many are pressed
  • Critical for games requiring complex key combos (MMOs, fighting games)

Browser Limitations

  • Some keys are captured by the OS: Print Screen, Win/Cmd key, some F-keys
  • Browser shortcuts override testing: Ctrl+W, Ctrl+T, Ctrl+N won't register here
  • Function keys (F1-F12) may trigger browser help or other features
  • For complete testing, use a dedicated desktop app or test in incognito mode
